14th - 20th June 2009, Lusaka, Zambia
We got to the Zambian border early as
it was only an hours drive from Lilongwe, and completed the crossing
with some ease, $50 Visa each and a Carbon tax of about £25. As
we started on the 600km road from the border to the capital Lusaka,
we realised there wasn't much to see, so decided to push on to the
city, and head to Chachacha Backpackers, where the Football Africa
boys had arrived earlier that day.
We only planned to spend a few days in
Lusaka as there really isn't much to do in the city, but those few
days soon turned into a week as Han's Camera needed fixing, the wheel
bearings exploded in the back left wheel on the Landy, we found a
very nice Cinema that only cost £1.30, and we met some really
nice people at the Camp who loved to Barbeque, and even managed to
catch the first test of the Lions tour.
21st - 25th June 2009, Livingstone,
Zambia
After some failed attempts over the
last few days, we finally managed to leave Lusaka, and made the 6
hour drive south to Livingstone, a small town 10km from Victoria
Falls. We managed to find a really nice place called Livingstone
Backpackers, TV room, Swimming Pool, Bar (of course!!) and all for $3
a night.
Our second day there we headed over to
Victoria Falls where the spray could be seen from miles away, paid
our $10 entry fee and spent the next few hours wandering around with
open mouths. The various views of the falls were incredible, with
paths that took you right to the bottom of the falls, and others that
took you right up to the point where the water drops off. Up close,
the spray actually felt like torrential rain and onlookers got
totally soaked.
On the way back we stopped at Victoria
Falls Premier hotel, The Royal Livingstone, and enjoyed a Coke while
sitting on the decking amid the Colonial setting with a great view of
the river and the Falls. One drink was all that we could afford, so
back in Livingstone we went out for dinner with the Football Africa
guys and a few others at the camp, then hit a few local bars.
We were all a bit fuzzy headed the next
day so just spent the afternoon napping and watching films, and as we
were parting company with the Football Africa Guys we thought one
more big night was in order. So after a few beers in town, we headed
back to the hostel bar, picking up a drink called Double Punch along
the way. This is a Pineapple flavoured drink that comes in a plastic
sachet of 60ml, is 42% strong and only costs 12p. 12 British
pence!!!! The rest of the night involved plenty of singing, dancing
on the bar, even some swimming pool action. We got to bed at about
5am! Andy managed to fall over 4 times on the way back to his tent
approx 20 feet away from where we said goodnight!
The boys as you can imagine didn't make
it Botswana the following day, so we managed to steal their company
for an extra day, we had a giggle watching movies and Wimbledon all
day nursing our hangovers!
The boys finally left the next day,
Boo! We'll really miss them as we have formed firm friendships and
had such a great time with them, and seen so much that we never would
have seen on our own.
Thanks guys for the good times! See you
when we get back. Good luck for the rest of the trip.
